BJP's water resource minister Girish Mahajan is in trouble over his controversial statement. Mahajan had claimed that contractors in irrigation department had offered him Rs100 crore bribe and were even ready to pay Rs10 crore cash as first instalment to retain the Rs1,100-crore contracts.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has now demanded that Mahajan be subjected to a narco test. The Congress wants a probe into the minister's claim.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said Mahajan is no more in Opposition to make wild and baseless statements and that he, as a minister, should talk responsibly. "If someone really offered him Rs100-crore bribe, he should immediately complain to the Anti-Corruption Bureau," Malik said.

The BJP legislator and minister from Jamner in Jalgaon district had made the Rs100-crore bribe claim to point to the syndicate corruption in the state government, particularly in the irrigation department.

"The contractors were ready to pay me Rs10 crore cash and Rs100 crore later... However, I flatly rejected the lucrative offer because we want to run a clean and corruption-free government in state," said Mahajan in his hometown recently.

Malik said the entire episode is quite suspicious. "By making such statements, what does he want to prove? If he is serious, he should reveal the names of the contractors who offered him bribe. There should be transparency while making any claim. Therefore, a narco test needs to be conducted on him," Malik added.

Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant also demanded a probe into the claim. Sawant asked that if bribe was offered to Mahajan, why has the minister not taken any action against that contractor.
Mahajan was not available for comment.

Besides this, BJP MP Sanjay Dhotre from Akola has come under attack for his "casual" and "insensitive" remark recently. Dhotre said farmers should be "left to die" if they are incapable or can't afford farming. "Let these farmers fend for themselves. If crops fail, they will figure out what to do. And if they are dying, let them die," Dhotre had said.
