The Bharatiya Janata Party may support the Nationalist Congress party when it presses for a no-confidence motion against the chairman of the Legislative Council, Shivajirao Deshmukh. He is a former Congress minister.

By joining hands with NCP, the BJP wants the chairman's post for itself. NCP leader and former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said that NCP would be pressing for the motion. Even though BJP has not opened its cards on this issue yet, it has not ruled out supporting NCP.

BJP leader and minister for parliamentary affairs, Girish Bapat, told mediapersons that the BJP has not yet decided its stand on this issue. He said, "The party would disclose its stand when the motion comes up for consideration." The NCP had moved the no-confidence motion against Deshmukh during the winter session of the state assembly in Nagpur in December last year.

The principal secretary to the legislature secretariat, Anant Kalse, said that when the motion is taken up for consideration, either the business advisory committee or the meeting of the group leaders of various parties can fix the day for discussing this motion. The decision must be taken in a week's time.

One of the BJP leaders said it would make no sense for BJP to abstain from voting on this motion. He said that NCP's motion is to remove the chairman, who is from the Congress, and BJP should support NCP rather than abstaining and thus helping Congress. Sources said that the BJP should help the NCP to remove Deshmukh, thus making a bid for the post of deputy chairman, even as NCP takes the chairman's post, as well as that of Leader of Opposition for its leader Dhananjay Munde in the Upper House.
