The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to contest the next Mumbai municipal corporation polls alone, snapping ties with its coalition partner Shiv Sena.

Upbeat after it became the single largest party for the first time in the Maharashtra assembly polls, the party is hoping that the trend will continue at the city level. BJP won 15 out of 36 assembly seats in Mumbai, Sena won 14. "We have emerged as the largest party in the state assembly polls. We intend to expand our base in the city. 'Cent percent BJP' will be our motto during the BMC polls too," a BJP source said.

"Definitely, we look forward to get the next mayor of the city from BJP," said Manoj Kotak, party's group leader in the BMC.

The BMC polls will be held in three years.

BJP wants to contest a majority of seats in the next municipal corporation polls, an arrangement that Sena is unlikely to accept, the source said.

Before a saffron wave brought it to power, BJP played younger brother to Sena, which has been the largest party in BMC for at least 18 years. The sitting mayor and her nine predecessors too have been from the party. During the 2012 BMC elections, which Sena and BJP fought jointly, Sena emerged as the largest party with 75 seats, and BJP won 31 seats in the 227-seat corporation.

Sena leader and chairman of BMC's standing committee Yashodhar Phanse declined to comment.
