It was an ordinary day, with me slipping into my red thigh-length dress, rushing to catch the fast local from Borivali station to reach my office at Lower Parel on time. I boarded the 2:20 pm Churchgate fast on platform number 5.
This is when I’d like to quote Forrest Gump’s mother, “...life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get” -- it seems on Wednesday, I got an expired one.
I got into the first general compartment (on the Virar side). I was busy checking for YouTube connection on my mobile when the train crossed Andheri. Suddenly, a fellow passenger told me that a man (later identified as Safiyaar Bashir Shaikh) sitting on a bag of clothes opposite me, might be taking my pictures.
It took me a minute or two to gather my wits and confront him. I started googling and making calls to the various RPF, GRP and Indian Railway helplines.
When the train crossed Bandra, I got through the 1512 helpline and explained the situation to the operator. The man, who would eventually be charged for having ‘outraged my modesty’, initially denied having done any wrong and even refused to handover his mobile. But my fellow passengers managed to take his mobile. I was informed by the operator that a police constable will meet me at Dadar station platform 4.
We were escorted to a police chowki at Dadar station where, not a picture, but a video, scanning me right from my legs to my head was found on Shaikh’s phone. Two hours later, I had a copy of my FIR registered at Mumbai Central GRP under Sections 509 (Insulting the modesty of a woman) and 354C (Voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code, with the knowledge and satisfaction that this bitter chocolate will now face the law.
