The biometric attendance system will soon be started in junior colleges, declared State Education Minister Vinod Tawde in Vidhan Parishad on Thursday.  When asked about how is the government is going to regulate private coaching classes, the minister — while answering the question of Member of Legislative Council Apoorv Hire in Vidhan Parishad — said biometric attendance will be made mandatory in junior colleges.

On a basis of the pilot project, the government has started the biometric attendance in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Ahmednagar and Solapur colleges this scheme from 2015. Students not attending colleges, showing fake IDs, giving admissions to students through offline process came to notice of the directorate of education. Hence, in an attempt to curb this, the government biometric attendance was started on a initial stage.

Many students take admission to junior colleges that started several integrated programmes. The junior colleges, having tie-ups with coaching classes, charge lakhs of rupees. The colleges mark 80% attendance for such students and allow them admission in class XII.

Hence, the minister declared this year, that this won’t be allowed and decided to introduce biometric attendance for students in junior colleges. If the students do not attend colleges as per norms, they would not be allowed to appear for the class XII board exams he declared early this year.
