Celebrating birthday proved fatal for a 26-year-old Govandi resident. He along with his two friends, were on their way to Girgaon Chowpathy, on a bike. On the Lalbaug flyover-bridge, the rider lost his balance sending the three crashing onto the road divider. Twenty six-year-old Akshay Kharpe and his friend Imran Khan died on the spot. The third youngster, 25-year-old Saddam, sustained major head injuries and is undergoing treatment at KEM Hospital.

It was Akshay's birthday on Tuesday. The three friends had a party at midnight on Monday, and later decided to visit the Siddhivinayak temple in Prabhadevi. But the temple would open only at 4am, so they decided to visit Girgaon Chowpathy before that. Accordingly, they proceeded on a Pulsar-220 (MH-03-BM-3202) to Girgaon. Saddam was the rider. Four of their other friends were with them on two separate bikes.

On the Lalbaug flyover, Saddam lost his balance and the bike hit the road divider, sending the three of them crashing and their head dashing against the divider, said Bapusaheb Gite, senior police inspector, Kalachowky station.
