Biggest affordable housing project in Thane gets nod

Four projects with 3,000 homes will be built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

In a big push for affordable housing in the state, proposals for 3,000 homes under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet project Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in Thane have been granted approval from the state government's appraisal committee. Four projects costing around Rs 325 crore were presented a few days ago to the committee.

The government is aggressively pursuing projects under PMAY and these new projects will add significantlty to the affordable housing stock in a flourishing city.

The four projects will come up on government land located in Betwade, Mhatardi and Padle, of which two projects are in Betwade and the remaining two are in Mhatardi and Padle areas respectively. These villages are located near Diva in Thane.

Of the entire project, 40 per cent is reserved for Project-Affected People, 40 per cent will be the affordable segment and the remaining 20 per cent will be reserved for the middle income group. According to sources, the municipal corporation will appoint developers for these projects.

For homes built under the PMAY, the central government will contribute Rs 1.5 lakh whereas the state government's contribution will be Rs 1 lakh for every PMAY house.

Sanjay Kumar, the housing secretary who heads the committee for PMAY, said, "Appraisal committee has considered the projects positively." Another member of the committee said, "A few days ago, there was a presentation made for the construction of these homes and it was passed by the appraisal committee. This is one of the biggest in the state that has been sanctioned in one go. Though there are a few others, this will be one of the biggest projects to come up near Mumbai."

The project will now be presented to the central government which will finally approve the project.
