Big projects done, MMRDA focus shifts to outskirts

While various infrastructure and transportation projects in the city have come to an end, some projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have started shaping up or are in the nascent stages of execution.

The projects that have got ready in Mumbai include Mumbai Monorail (Phase 1), Mumbai Metro I, Santa Cruz Chembur Link Road, Panjarpol Ghatkopar (Mankhurd) Link Road, Eastern Freeway, etc. In projects like the Monorail (Phase 2), Kherwadi flyover, etc. construction work has been considerably done.

In the MMR, several projects are in the pipeline — the extended Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project (MUIP), Multi Modal Corridor connecting Virar and Alibaug, Kalyan Ring Road, Shirgaon-Padgha-Titwala-Badlapur Link, Neral-Dasturi Naka-Matheran Road, Khopoli Bypass Road, etc.

"It is just a coincidence that projects in Mumbai are getting over and work on MMR projects has begun," said a senior official of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Feasibility studies are underway to undertake road projects like Kalyan Ring Road, Shirgaon-Padgha-Titwala-Badlapur Link, Neral-Dasturi Naka-Matheran Road, Khopoli Bypass Road, etc. in the Eastern Mumbai District.

Whereas under the extended MUIP, various roads, flyovers and creek bridges are being constructed apart from the development of nine roads in Vasai, Virar, Mira Road, Bhayander, Dombivli, Kalyan, Ambernath, Karjat and Badlapur. Similarly, six flyovers are also under construction in these areas, including Thane, along with a rail over bridge on Thane-Belapur Road.

The shift in focus of MMRDA is also because of the increase in population in the MMR which is outside greater Mumbai limits. The development authority had resolved in October 2008 that it will focus on the regional infrastructure projects for overall development of the region.
