Bid to rob jewellery store foiled, 3 held

The city crime branch sleuths on Saturday arrested three persons for allegedly planning to commit a theft in a jewellery store at Opera House. The accused had planned to create a hole in the wall of the store and decamp with jewellery.

Those arrested have been identified as Sattar Montu Shaikh, Ruhul Abdul Majid Shaikh and Kausar Khuda Baksh Mulla. Two of their accomplices, Fazlu Shaikh and Manrul Shaikh, managed to escape. The police have seized choppers, jacks and other equipment from the arrested persons.

According to the police, specific information was received by the officers from Unit II of crime branch that a gang of five people would arrive near French Bridge, Opera House, on Saturday to commit a theft in a jewellery store.
Subsequently a trap was laid at the said place. While Sattar, Ruhu and Kausar were apprehended, Fazlu and Manrul fled from the spot.

"The accused told the police that after the store would get closed, they were to create a hole in the rear wall, enter inside and decamp with the jewellery. The accused persons are natives of West Bengal and Jharkhand and stays in Nerul and Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai. Sattar has around eight criminal cases in Kolkata," said a crime branch officer.
