The Bhoiwada police arrested four persons on Friday and are on the lookout for another one, for duping at least 100 prospective buyers under the pretext of promising them Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) flats at a cheaper rate. The accused would pose as MHADA officials and dupe these buyers.

The arrested accused have been identified as Ramdas Bhasakar Chavan (41), Vijendra Pendkalkar (34), Mohammad Qureshi (45), Amit Jawale (43) and Aslam Shaikh, the racket's mastermind who is absconding.

Police said Shaikh, an estate agent, would instruct the other four to disguise themselves as MHADA officials and fool prospective buyers. After making the bookings, the accused would take money from the buyer and give them forged receipts along with agreements made on MHADA letterheads.

"We suspect the involvement of MHADA officials. Shaikh would arrange a meeting with his co-accused, and would then tell buyers to deal with them separately," a police officer from Bhoiwada police station said.
