The Bhoiwada metropolitan magistrate court on Wednesday extended the police custody of Sarfaraz Shaikh, who is accused of murdering HDFC Bank vice-president Siddharth Sanghvi till Friday. The NM Joshi Marg police station sought the extension as Sanghvi's wallet which was stolen by Shaikh has not been recovered.
According to the police, the preliminary motive behind the crime seems to be robbery. The police told the court that Shaikh had thrown away Sanghvi's wallet few meters away from where Sanghvi's body was dumped near Kalyan.
As per the investigation, the police has sent Shaikh's blood stained trousers for DNA test and other forensic examination. The police is also examining the CCTV footage. Sanghvi's car was spotted near some junctions of Lower Parel, Dadar, Mahim, Byculla from which his car was seen heading straight to Vashi and then Navi Mumbai.
"Shaikh has been saying the same thing from day one that the murder just happened while robbing Sanghvi and no third person was involved in the act. He is weeping and has realised his mistake," said a police officer.
"The wallet seems to be thrown in a bushy area near Kalyan. All other details shall be highlighted once police solves all the suspicious links and theories of the case," said public prosecutor Suchitra Narote.
