Two former city police commissioners RD Tyagi and MN Singh bore the brunt of Wednesday’s bandh as they had to take detours to reach their destinations.

Both the former top cops, who handled shutdowns and protests during their terms, expressed shock that the protesters not only blocked eastern and western express highways but also the city’s arterial roads, causing severe hardships for Mumbaikars.

They said this has created a bad precedent and in future other protesters may resort to similar tactics.

The duo were unanimous that more police personnel should have been deployed and they should have cleared the traffic on a priority basis while maintaining law-and-order.

Tyagi and Singh recalled that traffic movement never came to a standstill in the past when Shiv Sena would organise a bandh.

Tyagi, who left his office in Lower Parel for his Worli home, said “When I reached Worli Naka some protesters were squatting on the road and shouting slogans. There were few police personnel who were standing nearby. One of them told me to go Haji Ali but there also I was not allowed to take a U turn to reach Worli citing the closure of road. Even after two hours there was no traffic movement which was something unusual.”

Tyagi pointed out he could hardly see senior officers where roads were blocked. ‘’Police should have made proper arrangement to avoid a lot of inconvenience caused to the citizens,’’ he said.

Singh said he faild to understand the compulsions of the police. “They should have restored traffic as it must be on in the city like Mumbai,” he told DNA.
