Criticising the state government for its failure in preventing violence in the Bhima-Koregaon incident, president of the Congress' state unit Ashok Chavan on Saturday demanded Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' resignation.
A meeting of Congress leaders was held at the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) head office at Tilak Bhavan in Dadar. Former chief ministers Sushil Kumar Shinde and Prithviraj Chavan, former minister Harshawardhan Patil, Satej Patil, youth Congress leader Vishwajeet Kadam were present for the meeting.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Chavan said that the communal tension in various parts of the state was on a rise in the past three years after the BJP-Shiv Sena Government came to power. He said the state government is promoting tension within communities with its inaction in such incidents. Chavan alleged that Government was not acting against those who are fermenting such tension.
Replying to a question on BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta's statement that he was pressured by a leader, Chavan said Mehta should make the name public. Chavan said that MPCC would organise district wise party workers' conventions and camps. He informed that the state unit would request party president Rahul Gandhi to address public rallies in the state during these camps.
