Assuring that the judicial inquiry into the Bhima Koregaon incident would be time-bound, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said that the committee with a sitting High Court judge can be given powers of invoking Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to suggest the quantum of punishment to the guilty.

Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh president Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, had demanded that the provision of such powers be made while conducting the inquiry.

Speaking to DNA Fadnavis said that there is no issue in providing such powers while conducting the inquiry. "This judicial inquiry will be time-bound and if you recall inquiry into Mumbai riots by Justice Shrikrishna was also time-bound. We would ensure that the guilty are punished," said the CM.

Violence erupted at Koregaon Bhima in Shirur Taluka of Pune district on January 1, 2018 when lakhs of Dalits gathered at Bhima Koregaon to commemorate the victory of the 1818 Koregaon war. The violence at Bhima Koregaon resulted in escalating violence across the state. The state government has announced a judicial inquiry into the incident which killed one person.

Replying to a question during a curtain raiser event of the proposed Magnetic Maharashtra convergence 2018, Fadnavis allayed the concerns that the incident in any way would hamper investment potential in the state.

Criticising the state government for its failure in preventing violence in the Bhima-Koregaon incident, president of the Congress' state unit Ashok Chavan on Saturday demanded Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' resignation.
