Property wasn’t the only reason behind fights between Bhayander residents Girish Pote, 35, and his 33-year-old French wife.
On Tuesday, Pote killed his wife Madhuwanti Pathak and chopped her to pieces, allegedly because she wanted to sell her property and move to France with her two-year-old son.
On Thursday, the police said Pote was having an affair with a bar girl from Dahisar and this led to quarrels between them. Sources said Pathak wanted to celebrate New Year’s in France and wanted to leave the country. But, Pote was against this. During interrogation, Pote said that during their fights, he used to torture her by burning her hands with cigarettes.
Pote was arrested by the Navghar police after he strangulated and chopped Madhuwanti into pieces and hid the body parts in the fridge. The murder was found out after he told his cousin Nitin Gadare about it.
“He told Gadare about the crime, thinking he would help him dispose of the body,” said a police officer.
But Gadare informed the police, who arrested Pote for murder and destruction of evidence. He has been remanded in police custody till December 12.
“Girish has being having an affair with a bar girl from Dahisar. Her clothes were recovered from the flat but she has no role in the murder. After Madhuwanti came to know about his extra-marital affair with the bar girl, their relationship soured further,” said Anil Kumbhare, district superintendent of police, Thane Rural.
The police have recovered the blood-stained clothes of Pote and Pathak from the house.
On Thursday, French embassy officials met the Navghar police for handing over the body to her relatives in France. Madhuwanti’s grandmother lives in France and attempts are being made to contact her.
