Starting January 1, the Western Railway has begun running a new improved version of Shatabdi Express on Mumbai-Ahmedabad route. Apart from revamped interiors, the striking feature of the train is CCTV cameras.

This will the first time Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains will have surveillance cameras. Earlier, the railways had drawn a lot of flak following a couple of thefts inside these premium trains.

"The first set of CCTVs will be installed inside five coaches by this month. We have sent a proposal to have CCTVs inside all the 125 coaches of these LHB make to the Railway Board for permission," said a Western Railway official.

These LHB coaches are said to be better than the existing coaches manufactured at Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. There will be at least four CCTVs inside each coach that will also have digital video recording as well. It will be installed at a cost of around Rs 1.80 lakh per coach.

"We have started operating this new Shatabdi train on Mumbai-Ahmedabad route. These changes have been made under Rs 50 lakh," said Mukul Jain, Divisional Railway Manager (Mumbai), Western Railway.

This train has 18-coaches while the remaining five coaches are kept as spares at Mumbai Central coach care center. The WR have made several changes inside the 23 coaches of Shatabdi train that run everyday on this route. The train has also been provided with a QR code which can be scanned and suggestions and complaints can be made online.

Meanwhile the WR are also working on improving the linen provided to passengers inside Rajdhani and other trains. At present, the linen inside Rajdhani trains are washed once a month while inside other trains it is done after 2 months. This is happening as the WR authorities doesn't have capacity to wash huge quantum of linen.

Currently they have a small linen washing plant at Grant Road that has a daily capacity to take 6 tonnes of linen. Now, the they are setting up one at Wadi Bunder in Sandhurst Road with a capacity of washing 20 tonnes. At present the Central Railway has a washing plant at Wadi Bunder.
