Thirty-one-year-old Nashik resident, Swapan Kanade, paid Rs3 lakh to a placement agency in the city, to help him find him a job in Dubai. The Vashi-based agency was supposed to secure Kanade's visa and other documents required to work in the foreign country.

When Kanade contact the agency office to enquire about his visa two weeks later, he found that the number was switched off. He then reached their office in Vashi to meet the officials of the agency and clear his doubts. To his surprise, their office was also locked.

On reaching the police station to register a complaint, he realised that over 40 people had been cheated to the tune of roughly Rs30 lakh by the agency, using the same modus operandi. Although cops have arrested a few people associated with the placement agency, the main culprits are still on the run.

This is not an isolated incident that has taken place in the satellite city. Several people from various parts of the country have fallen victims to such fake placement agencies operating in the city. "These culprits reach out to people through various networking sites and advertisements and take Rs2-5 lakh from them after promising a job, mostly in the Gulf countries. However, they go into hiding once they collect the money from the victims," said a senior police officer Navi Mumbai crime branch.

The police, however, believe the victims are responsible for their fate in many cases. "The victims come to the city and pay a huge amount of money to the fake agencies here. They only approach us when they realise that they have been cheated by the agency," said another police officer. "Same is the case with the parents of engineering and medical seats aspirants. All these parents are educated and they know very well what is right and what is wrong. Despite that, some end up giving money to these culprits to ensure a seat for their ward, and finally get duped," he added.

"Several ads appear in newspapers daily regarding overseas job offers. People blindly apply and become a victim of fake recruiting agencies. Before approaching any agency, one must thoroughly research the background of the agency. One should be especially careful of those agencies that ask for a huge amount," he added.

"We are taking all possible steps to reduce the menace in the city. The victims also meet the suspects in hotels and restaurants and approach us only after they realise they have been cheated," the officer said.
