BEST plans to increase ticketing revenue and reduce operational expenditure

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) has more plans under its sleeves to reduce operational expenditure and increase ticketing revenue. These measures were discussed during the undertaking's standing committee meeting last week.

Dedicated bus lanes have been planned and demanded by the BEST on a few arterial roads of Mumbai. This, they say, will not only help in cutting down operational expenditures but will also reduce travelling time for commuters.

As per the plans, dedicated bus lanes may come up between Haji Ali and Worli, on Eastern Express Highway, Western Express Highway and Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road. Every hour, around 156 buses ply on JVLR and having a special lane would mean cutting down on travelling time and more people preferring public buses over auto rickshaws or private cars.

The other aspect that the BEST wants to take up with the Mumbai traffic police is that decongesting roads outside selected railway stations. And to begin with, Kurla (East), Bandra (East), Andheri (East) and (West) and Dadar have been proposed. Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS) may be planned to clear station roads from the present congestion.

Thirdly, all the students attending civic schools may get BEST bus passes provided the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation pays for it. "If BMC is willing to pay for bus passes for students, it will be a safe and secure ride for the children," said Jagdish Patil, general manager, BEST.

At the moment, student passes are available for Rs165 and BEST is willing to provide it at a concessional rate of Rs125.

On June 17, the day of auto strike, the BEST earned Rs 5.7 crore from sale of tickets as compared to Rs 3.5 crore it gets on any other week day.
