Kishore Sampat, resident of Chira Bazaar, and his wife waited for days to buy gold on Akshay Tritiya yesterday. Irrespective of the yellow metal's price, the husband-wife duo made it a point to buy it on Monday. While the Sampats will be buying gold, a number of the others start their business venture or open offices on this day.

Considered to be the most auspicious of days, the day is mainly observed by Hindus and Jains. The belief is that prosperity is never-ending if starts on this day. A range of offers usually mark the day, such as discounts on booking flats, vehicles or starting a new venture.

The day has several mythological stories around it. Among Hindus, the day marks the writing of the epic Mahabharata and the birth of Lord Parshuram, the sixth reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, considered to be the sustainer of the world.

Jains, on the other hand, observe the day because the first of the Tirthankars, Rushabdev, broke his 13-month fast on this day. "Before Jain dharma, the only dharma that existed was that of penance. On this day, the lord completed 13 months of fasting. He ended his fast by having sugarcane water offered to him on this day. In his memory, many Jains have a 13-month-long fast," said Munirajshri Mahashtavdani Ajitchandrasagar Maharajsaheb.

Called Varshitap, the fast makes it mandatory for a person to have boiled water between sunrise and sunset on one day, and two meals the second day. "The fast period is 400 days. Due to some religiously significant days that fall in between, the number of days on which the fast is held is more than those on which one is allowed to eat," said Hasubhai Shah, member of Shri Sankeshwar Parshwanath Shwetambar Murtipujak Tapagacha Jain Sangh, which will be organising a fast-ending function at police grounds in Ghatkopar East.

"Around 15,000 people will be attending the event and 365 will be ending their fasts," said Dinesh Shah, secretary of the Sangh.
