City students, with workers of the Deonar abattoir, on Tuesday held a rally to protest against the implementation of the recent Maharashtra Animal Preservation Bill, which has led to the slaughter house staffers losing their jobs.
Students from Mumbai university, IIT-B, TISS and IIPS had organised the rally, with 250-300 workers from the abattoir joining in. They started at 12pm from the abattoir, going uptil Ambedkar Garden in Chembur and then further to Azad Maidan.
TISS research scholar Baljeet Yadav said, "The number of students was less as exams are on. But we were joined by workers from the abattoir."
"There has been no rehabilitation plan rolled out for those who have lost employment since the Bill was implemented. People who are in favour of the Bill had warned us against holding the rally. But we will continue to protest till the government does not come out employment guarantee of these workers," said another TISS student Sanjay Kumar Pandit.
