A 17-year-old boy died in a city hospital on Thursday, allegedly due to the injuries he received after he was mercilessly beaten up by some inmates of David Sassoon Children Home in Matunga.

"My son was battling for his life in the ICU of Nair Hospital. He passed away this morning," said Jameel Ahmed Khan (60), Amir Ahmed's father. "The Shivaji Park police were informed about the incident on May 23 itself, but they have not taken any action yet," he complained.

Amir was arrested by the Powai police in April connection with a theft case and he was sent to the Matunga home.

According to Amir's father, his son was arrested for drug abuse. He alleged that Amir was beaten up by inmates of the home with bamboo sticks, cricket bats and iron rods. "When we secured bail for him on May 20 and brought him back home, he was writhing in pain. We were shocked to see the wounds that were inflicted on my son's body. Besides being beaten up mercilessly, he was also scalded with a hot iron rod."

When Amir was taken to Rajawadi Hospital, he was given basic treatment and sent back. On May 23, when he was once again taken to Rajawadi hospital, they referred Amir to Nair Hospital and the hospital authorities informed the Shivaji Park police station.

In a video recording done before his death, Amir stated that a gang of inmates in the Matunga Home demand money and drugs from new inmates. "He said that he was beaten up from 3am to 9am by the gang. When some policemen saw what had happened, they offered him some balm and told him to keep quiet," said Khan.

The Shivaji police station had earlier registered a case of 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the IPC against 12 inmates. However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Mahesh Patil said: "We have now converted the case into that of murder. They claimed that Amir was trying to run away from the home but he was pulled inside and beaten up."
