A 42-year-old man allegedly assaulted his younger brother and locked him inside their house where the latter died unattended. The accused was angry because his now-dead sibling used to demand money of him to consume alcohol again and again. The Kalwa police have arrested the accused and recovered the weapon used in the assault.

On the fateful day, the deceased, Vilas Thorat (40), a resident of Janki Nagar in Kalwa area of Thane, demanded for money from his Dilip Thorat (42) for buying booze. Dilip tried to reason with Vilas but in vain. The reasoning soon turned into a heated argument between the two brothers, following which Dilip started assaulting Vilas, who was kicked, punched and beaten with a belt. Though Vilas received severe injuries in the attack, Dilip locked him up in their house and left for work.

"The accused was furious over his younger brother's addiction to alcohol. He tried to explain to him several times but failed. On the day of the incident, the accused locked him up after assaulting him brutally, causing his death", said an officer from Kalwa police station, adding that the accused was arrested after the death of the 40-year-old.

Police sub-inspector Avinash Pote, who is the investigating officer as well as complainant in the case, said: "We have registered the case under sections 302 (murder), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 323 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal code. We have recovered the weapons used in the assault and are investigating further."
