Yauatcha at Bandra-Kurla Complex has carved a niche for itself in Cantonese cuisine with the Dim Sum and tea house retaining its core essence through each of its offerings. A fabulous example of that is the restaurant’s signature tea cocktails. Infusing the goodness of tea to some of their cocktails, the restaurant has paired it well with Mumbai’s scorching summer. We sampled some of their signature tea cocktails along with other non-alcoholic drinks, paired with specific food dishes aimed to create a wholesome combination.

The taste report
The first to hit our taste buds was Lalu, which is Vodka layered with lychee liqueur, lemongrass, oolong tea and lychee juice. While no one seemed to know why this drink is called Lalu, it is clear why it’s one of the signature drinks at Yauatcha. Lemongrass is crushed ever so gently and then mixed with other ingredients in perfectly measured quantities. The bamboo shoot garnish to the zesty cocktail sealed the deal for us. The drink was paired with Har Gau, a steaming prawn dumpling, whose beauty lies in its minimalism. Next was the Gushing Spring cocktail, which had a dominant tropical flavour, paired with truffle edamame dumpling. Cha La Lai is yet another tea cocktail made with Vodka, black grapes, oolong tea, apple juice and brightened with sparkling wine on top. The flavours are combined such that they each caress the taste buds one after another, and do not end up being one giant mishmash. Cha La Lai was served with the most unique poached peking dumpling served in a bowl. We were told to bite into but also slurp at the same time to get a flavour of the duck gelée within. Two other drinks that impressed us were the Tokyo Slide cocktail and the Kiwi and Lime Ice Tea; the latter, we were told, is a hit with the ladies.

The final verdict
At the end of the session, it was hard to pick a favourite as the drinks (crafted by experts from the London team) are created to suit every palate possible. It is also interesting to note that Yauatcha believes in using fresh fruit puree instead of packaged juices, which results in the finest of beverages. Our last word—try them all!
