Beach clean-up gathers steam across city

On Sunday, Bandra residents with the help of civic officials of the H-West ward came forward to clean up Chimbai beach, from Laxmi Narayan Mandir up to St Andrews Church.

With the world’s largest community beach clean-up drive at Versova paving the way for others to follow suit, citizens in various parts of the city have been stepping forward to clean up filthy beaches in their neighbourhoods. Beaches at Juhu, Chimbai and Mahim are also being cleaned by nearby residents.

On Sunday, Bandra residents with the help of civic officials of the H-West ward came forward to clean up Chimbai beach, from Laxmi Narayan Mandir up to St Andrews Church. Over 30 residents along with a few NGOs volunteered to participate in the H-West ward’s clean-up drive.

Within a few hours of the drive, 42 metric tonnes of waste were collected through the initiative. Sharad “Residents, along with solid waste management (SWM) labour staff, removed plastic waste from the beach and mangroves.

We managed to collect approximately 42 metric tonnes of waste in one clean-up drive. We will be continuing the initiative on Sundays,” said Ughade, Assistant Commissioner of H-West ward. 

Two weeks ago, Juhu residents stepped forward to clean-up the Juhu-Khar Danda area. The Mahim Beach Committee has also been following up on a clean-up drive along with the BMC’s SWM department staff. Besides the cleanliness drive, civic authority will also start beautification of Mahim beach soon.
