Halloween has become quite a rage in downtown Mumbai. Inspired perhaps by Hollywood blockbusters like the Twilight saga and the Harry Potter series and American TV shows, people are all set to host and enjoy costume parties this year.

Youngsters, in particular, are all set for a spooky dress-up session; boys are in fact having a tough time choosing between the likes of Edward Cullen, Harry Potter, and Professor Snape. As for girls, most of them want to look ghastly, but in a pretty way. “I am trying out Twilight’s Bella look. It is very simple–all I have to wear is a regular pair of jeans with a t-shirt and a denim jacket over it. The only gruesome addition is the red eye lens, which my cousin got me from the US,” says 24-year-old Bianca, who works as a copywriter in an Ad agency in Worli.

Some young women, however, are planning to be a little more adventurous in trying to look as scary as possible by using glow-in-the-dark face paints to make DIY-masks, painting nails with those colours, and even going for glow-in-the dark tattoos. “We are planning a girls’ night on Halloween. I plan to use multi-coloured glow-in-the-dark face paints. We are also planning to decorate the party zone with real pumpkin carvings and candles,” says Saheetya R, a techie, who is attending a Halloween party at her friend’s place in Dadar.

“I don’t want to waste time painting my face. I will simply wear a scary tattoo and a scarf with a skull on it,” says Rabi Vikas, a businessman, who is attending a Halloween party at Lower Parel.
Twenty-nine-year old Worli resident, Sanjeev Dodum’s all-time favourite character has been Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. “I dressed up like Jack Sparrow last year and the year before that. So this time too, I am planning to dress up like him. Moreover, Jack Sparrow’s costume gives me the freedom to drink rum anytime,” smiles Dodum. Colaba resident, Namrata Mukherjee, a call centre employee, says, “Since I work for a US process, we celebrate Halloween religiously every year. The whole bay, including our workstations, is decorated with pictures of pumpkins, skulls, and witches. This year, our dress code is black. I am planning a cute-witch look.”

With each vying to look scarier than the other, people are willing to even hire costumes from shops and dresswallahs. “There are stores from where you can hire dresses. The variety is unbelievable. You get costumes of superheroes, historical characters, cartoons, and more. You even get wigs and capes,” says Anita, a Parel-based homemaker, who is planning a Halloween party. “I plan to wear black jeans and a black full sleeve t-shirt with a black cape. This would make me look like Catwoman,” she says.

If you are into planning ahead, you can take these tips to get the right look for Halloween. As for late-Kates, they can simply wear the readily available mask from the movie Scream!
