Mumbai: Banker run over by train as chain-snatcher pushes her during stealing bid

A 24-year-old banker died after a teenager allegedly tried to snatch her chain, but failed. After the chain-snatching attempt, the girl lost her balance and was hit by an approaching train at Kurla railway station. Commuters managed to nab the suspect, before handing him over to the Railway Police.

The deceased, identified as Sapna Shukla, 24, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was residing in Ghatkopar as a paying guest. Shukla worked with a private firm at Bandra-Kurla Complex. She was returning home after work when the incident occurred.

Shukla was trying to board an 8.20 pm train from CST on Kurla station. The accused, identified as Shubashish Charan Malik,? 19,? who was standing near Shukla, tried to snatch her chain by pushing her. Shukla, who was standing near the edge of the platform, lost her balance and was hit by an approaching train. Commuters rushed to help Shukla, while a few chased the suspect. Shafiq Rafiq Shaikh, 34, a Kurla resident, witnessed the incident and informed Government Railway Police. The incident was caught on the railway station's CCTV camera. "He (Malik) has been remanded to police custody," said Rupali Ambure, DCP (Central Railway), GRP.
