The members of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), a Bangladesh-based terror group that acts as the front-runner of Al-Qaeda in Asean countries, could target major cities in the country, sources said. ATS suspects that ABT terrorists may have entered several cities of the country from India-Bangladesh border and are illegally residing to carry out terror activities.

According to sources, the ABT has become a threat for the country. The ATS has begun its crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, who are staying in the state with fake documents like pan card and Aadhar card. On March 17, the Maharashtra ATS arrested 12 such persons after an alert from central agencies that since the ABT has been banned in Bangladesh in 2016, the members of the organisation can enter India's major cities to create their base, said a source.

In a first, after Bodh Gaya attack in the year 2016, ABT's connection has come afore in the country after the ATS arrested three persons from Pune, who were working in a defence installation as laborers. The accused Mohammad Ripon Hossein (25), Hannan Anwar Khan alias Hanan Babarali Ghazi (28) and Mohammadwadi Habibur Rahman alias Raj Jesub Mandal (31) had created a forged Pan card and Aadhar card by paying a mere Rs 700 and were staying in the country since past two years.

"It's the first time that a connection of ABT has come afore in the country and we have added stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against the accused apart from IPC sections. It has been revealed that these arrested members were helping the active terrorists and we are now trying to find out their other linkages from their mobile phone and personal interrogation(sic)," said an ATS officer.

The ATS is now in the process of tracing other illegal immigrants related to the accused.
