Bandra is known for its lively nightlife, heritage gaothan and its cultural vibe that draws a huge crowd from the suburbs. However, residents of Casa Maria Society, situated on the popular D’Monte Park Road, are annoyed by the ugly sight that welcomes them every day.

Bane to the society

PM Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan has influenced a lot of people across the nation but a few individuals living in this neighbourhood don’t seem to pay heed to his message. There have been cases of incessant dumping in the area and residents have now complained to the H/West ward regarding the same. Sidney Gomes, a resident of Casa Maria, shares, “It is shocking to see that at one corner of this park, garbage worth three truck-fulls is dumped. This garbage is thrown over the wall by residents of the buildings adjacent to the other side of the park.”

Another Casa Maria resident adds, “Mr. Zakharia, the then Corporator; Mr. Khan and Mr. Shah (garden officers) used to coordinate with the ward to get the garbage cleared on a regular basis. However, the current scenario is different and the garbage is not cleared up.”  Such poor levels of hygiene lead to the breeding of rats and mosquitoes, which is unsafe and unhealthy for the residents living around the park. Two individuals have been reported to have contracted dengue, which is worrying the residents even more.

Ward speaks

Chandrakant Tambe, Junior Overseer, H/West ward, shares, “The dumping has originated from an SRA building nearby. We have already gotten it cleaned last week and have spoken to those residents regarding the same. However, we are soon planning to have another awareness drive requesting them to not throw garbage on the road. We are also planning to provide dustbins to them as that would solve the problems to an extent.”
