The Bandra Reclamation Area Volunteers Organisation (BRAVO) have joined hands with BMC's H-West ward along with NGO Stree Mukti Sanghatana to start a zero waste campaign to make their area garbage free.

Through this initiative, the societies and institutes will manage their waste by segregating it at the local level. While the wet waste will be turned into compost or biogas, the dry waste will be collected by the BMC.

So far, 40 buildings and seven institutes — including schools, colleges, hospitals, offices, and hotels located in Bandra Reclamation area — have joined the initiative and agreed to segregate waste.

Speaking about the initiative, Vidya Vaidya, member of BRAVO, said, "The initiative has been in the pipeline for a decade. With the help of a ward officer, we have started this initiative at the ground level to reach our zero waste management target. We are making people aware about waste segregation and giving them four options — segregation at individual household, a society coming together to segregate at one point, more than one society coming together to segregate at one point, or collecting at the BMC's segregation plant near Bandra station."

The awareness will soon be spread among other residents, housing societies, and institutes this month.

Bandra is one of the highest per capita generators of garbage —generating 350 metric tons of waste per day.

"Our focus is mainly to ask people to segregate the waste and recycle it. Our volunteers will be helping the residents to segregate the waste and clear their doubts. The compost made through the wet waste can later be used by the residents in their own house or gardens. As the BMC has joined hands with us, many societies are coming forward to engage in this initiative, " said, Jyoti Mhapsekar from Stree Mukti Sanghatana.

H-West Ward Assistant Commissioner Sharad Ughade was not available to comment on the initiative.
