A departmental enquiry ordered by the Mumbai police commissioner into the allegation made by the Bandra molestation victim that she was made to visit three police stations to get her case registered, has, to a great extent, given a clean-chit to the policemen at the three stations.

The enquiry was conducted by the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Zone V, Mahesh Patil. After the enquiry had concluded, DCP Patil said that there was no 'major lapse' by the policemen from Dharavi, Shahu Nagar and Mahim police station. The senior police officer has also justified the decision of the Shahu Nagar police station of not taking a Zero FIR in the case. "I have conducted a thorough enquiry into the matter and have submitted the report. I stated that there were no serious lapse from the end of policemen."

According to DCP Patil, when the victim approached the Dharavi police station a policemen accompanied her immediately in a police vehicle hoping that the accused would be still be in the area. Later, when the police team reached the spot of crime they came to know that the jurisdiction was with Shahu Nagar and hence they took her to Shahu Nagar police station, and even there a PSI accompanied the victim to the spot and later took her to the Bandra police station where an FIR was registered and within few hours the accused were arrested. " A Zero FIR should have been registered but taking accused to the spot and then to the police station under whose jurisdiction the crime occurred helped as the police were able to nab the culprit in few hours", said DCP Patil.

On August 17, the 21-year-old victim was allegedly molested by two youths at an isolated spot in Bandra in western suburban Mumbai. The victim and her boyfriend who were on a bike ride had stopped near Dharavi, a central suburb close to Bandra, looking for cigarettes. The three accused allegedly offered them to help locate a shop and lead them to a deserted alley. Two of the three accused then allegedly molested the victim and even punched her boyfriend before fleeing with their mobile phones.

The Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, embarrassed by the burking and the stress caused to the victim had apologized to the victim and ordered an enquiry into the case.
