The Bombay high court recently released a mother-daughter duo on bail after they were arrested for allegedly murdering the unmarried daughter's seven-day-old girl child.

Justice Revati Mohit Dhere granted bail to Suchita and Archana Mandavkar, who were arrested by Sahar police. The two were granted bail on grounds that the entire case is based on circumstantial evidence, the investigation is complete, and chargesheet filed.

On October 4, a seven-day-old infant was allegedly murdered and dumped in Sahar area of Andheri (East). According to the police, Archana Mandavkar was having an affair and she gave birth to the child. The accused, in their statements, told the police that they decided to dump the child as the man was not willing to marry her.

Some locals found the newborn's body in a nullah and fire brigade officials recovered it. It had been wrapped in a plastic bag and had injury marks on face and strangulation marks on neck. The police found a medical bill in the bag. Upon further inquiries, it was learnt that the medicines were prescribed by a doctor in Sion hospital.

The police then traced the address of the accused from the doctor. Initially, the duo denied the crime but later confessed to it. The court, though, after going through the chargesheet, noted that the prosecution's case rested entirely on circumstantial evidence, while the self-implicating statements of the accused made under section 27 are inadmissible.

The court thus released them on a personal bond of Rs15,000 each on the condition that they will have to attend the police station till completion of the trial.
