"This is worrisome. I had recently written to the police commissioner stating the need for more patrolling as there are drug peddlers in the area. I would say police need to take adequate measures to ensure such an incident is not repeated. They need to make sure that all security agencies send guards after doing a proper background check. The agencies need to be registered, too. They should also ensure that the security guards are not changed daily," said Anandini Thakoor, managing trustee of the Khar Residents Association.
She added, "Right now, the strength of the patrolling staff is low. Senior officers should be in part of the patrol team to ensure it is done effectively."
Another association felt that more safety measures should be implemented in areas where the majority of the residents are senior citizens and these should be gated societies. "What happened is very sad. While it would be unfair to generalise, background checks must be done more effectively. The accused in this case is a history-sheeter, and there are chances of her having a criminal record," said Manju Gupta, Vice President, Union Park Residents Association, another ALM in the vicinity.
