A juvenile 3-ft-long rat snake (non-venomous) scared the living daylights out of the residents of a building in Sion's Jain Society. The snake was spotted basking in the sun on the balcony of a first-floor flat, with its jaws wide open.

Residents of the Kranti Sadan building first noticed several crows circling the area. Suddenly, somebody spotted the snake on the roof. Around 60 people gathered at the spot, due to which the police had to be called to control the situation. The cops then called up Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW), an NGO, which finally rescued the snake.

"I was in the neighbouring shop when I suddenly heard crows cawing loudly and hovering over that flat. Then we noticed the snake. Its jaws were open and it was 3 feet long. We panicked and more people rushed to the spot to catch a glimpse of the reptile. Since we did not know whether it was poisonous, we called the police," said Kailash Sapkale, a local. The situation was brought under control in an hour's time.

RAWW's Rushil Bhatt said, "I got a call from the police about the snake. When we reached the spot, there was a huge crowd in the area. The people remained calm, nobody attacked the snake. After catching the snake, we informed people that it is a non-venomous snake and what they should do in such a situation. Our numbers are always available with the police."

The snake will be taken to the Mumbai forest range office and released back into its natural habitat.
