In a month’s time, the B ward office building will be the first eco-friendly building of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The ward has taken a number of measures including setting up solar panels, rainwater harvesting system and introduction of LED bulbs. The initiative, taken up in the B ward of the BMC, is the first of its kind where a civic office building’s terrace has been used to set up solar panels. This not only provides energy to light up the office premises but will also help save Rs 4.5 lakh annually in electricity bills. The solar power panels started functioning on Monday.

Set at a cost of Rs 18 lakh, the civic body will recover its cost in just five years and thereafter, the ward office will get 2,400 units annually free of cost for the next 20 years. The solar power generated will also be supplied to BEST during fixed hours on weekdays and throughout the day on Sundays, officials said.

The 20 kW grid solar panels will help lower the power consumption bill of the ward office. Sachin N Jadhav, SE (electrical) of B Ward said: “There are total 64 solar panels each of 315 watts. It is a 25-year plan with a total cost of Rs 18 lakh. However, the cost will be recovered in first five years.”

At present, the B ward office consumes around 85 to 95 kW electricity per month which cost around Rs 2 to 3 lakh.

Sachin Jadhav, another civic official from B ward said that the rainwater harvesting system will be set up in next three to four days within the office building premises. “We are expecting to store around 20,000 liters water everyday during monsoon when there will be good rainfall,” said Jadhav, adding that in order to save power, they will switch to LED lights.
