Responding to the call for Swachh Bharat, Welingkar Institute of Management (WeSchool) in the city has taken up the cause, and its teams are helping the BMC with audits of the cleanliness drive and creating awareness among residents in G ward.

The institute has set up six teams comprising students, faculty and staff. The teams visit Shivaji Park and Siddhivinayak temple areas thrice a day to inspect the drive. They have been asked to examine and inspect the cleanliness of roads, bins, public toilets, collection of household waste, use of plastic bags as well as checking the upkeep of trees in internal roads and lanes. They would also be monitoring footpaths and dividers.

The WeSchool teams are not only carrying out the audit based on the 13 parameters defined by BMC but are also contributing detailed area-wise pointers to the authorities based on their findings which include spaces in housing societies, shopping areas and abandoned old cars where garbage is accumulated, spitting nuisance, lack of proper signage, plastic and water logging, broken garbage bins, unused drainage pipes cluttering the area and many more pointers leading to cleanliness.

The drive, which began on January 7, will continue till January 17. A comprehensive report combining the observations and evaluation of the teams will then be submitted to the authorities, so the agenda for further action can ee set up in the interest of healthy ecosystems and improved quality of life in the city.

Captain V N Kanade, general manager at WeSchool, is heading the campaign and participating in it. Sharad Ughade, assistant commissioner of G North ward (section 185) who was instrumental in the initiative, said that the campaign is aimed at making the citizens in the area aware of efforts taken by MCGM in maintaining day-to-day cleanliness and also to encourage them to segregate waste and keep the surroundings clean.

Professor Dr Uday Salunkhe, group director, said institutions like WeSchool should collaborate, with all their stakeholders, to spread awareness and change the mindset of people, empowering them for economic prosperity and sustainable environment.
