A 50-year-old national award winning teacher from Airoli committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan of his residence on Tuesday morning. He took the extreme step when he was alone at home. His wife discovered his body around 1.30pm.

According to the police, Dilip Sankhe, a teacher with Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) school No50 in Airoli, stayed with his wife and daughter at Shiv Shankar Plaza II in sector 7. His wife, Dakshata, is a teacher too, in NMMC school No42 in Ghansoli.

“His wife discovered his corpse, hanging from the ceiling fan of their kitchen, and informed us. Sankhe was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” a police officer from Rabale police station said.

The police also found a suicide note written in Marathi at the spot, which says that he took the step because he had been unable to sleep for last fifteen to twenty days. He decided to sleep forever, and added in his note that no one should be held responsible for his death.

Sources at the police station told this newspaper that Sankhe had molested three of his class 8 students around three months ago. “The victim’s family were hesitating to file an FIR and in the meantime Sankhe had taken an anticipatory bail from a local court. Later, we booked him under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code after the victim’s family approached us,” a senior police officer said.

Meanwhile, NMMC education department officials confirmed that they had suspended Sankhe on August 14 after a departmental enquiry was conducted against him. Harun Atar, an NMMC education officer said, “After receiving complaints from the girls’ families, we took a consensual approach and suspended him. He had been sitting idle ever since.”

According to the residents of Shiv Shankar Plaza II, Sankhe was a very good teacher and friendly with everyone.  The officer said, “The deceased’s body was sent to NMMC hospital in Vashi for postmortem and was later handed over to his family. Although Sankhe did not specify the reason in his suicide note, we suspect that he had been feeling guilty for the last three months.”
