In a major relief for suburban rail commuters in Mumbai, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said automatic doors would be tested on local trains on the harbour line. Based on the experience in this pilot, the project will be extended to other routes.

Speaking in the state legislative council on Wednesday, Fadnavis added that the work on the Colaba-Bandra- SEEPZ metro railway line would also begin in 2015.

The chief minister said the state government was committed to making Mumbai a world-class city and would go in for speedy execution of projects in infrastructure, housing and transport.

Taking a dig at the previous Congress-NCP government's resolve to convert Mumbai into Shanghai, Fadnavis said instead of converting it into Shanghai, Tokyo or Singapore, they would preserve the ethos and identity of the city.

The Centre had decided to ensure housing for all by 2022 and the state government is also thinking on these lines.

He sated that MMRDA will complete the work on the MTHL using a loan from JAICA and the EPC model and houses will be provided for workers from defunct textile mills and policemen.
