The new fares for autorickshaw, taxi and cool cabs will be applicable from June 1, only if electronic meters are calibrated. However, the revised fare for fleet taxis will come into effect only after the minutes of today's meeting get approved.
"Minimum fare for the initial 1.5km has been increased by a rupee for auto and taxi both," said B Ajri, regional transport officer (RTO), East (Wadala). Therefore, the minimum fare will now stand at Rs18 and Rs22 for auto and taxi, respectively.
For cool cab, the hike has been by Rs2. "Earlier the minimum fare was Rs26 for the initial 1.5km. From June 1, it will be Rs28," said Subhash Pedamkar, deputy RTO, Tardeo.
As per the new methodology to arrive at fares for fleet cabs, the vehicles have been divided into two categories. "The State Transport Authority (STA) has approved that the two categories will be based on the cost of the cars, i.e., vehicles costing up to Rs8 lakh and those above Rs8 lakh," said Satish Sahasrabuddhe, additional transport commissioner.
The minimum fare for cars in the below-Rs8 lakh category will now be Rs90 for the first 4km and then Rs22 for every kilometer. Similarly, for vehicles in the above-Rs8 lakh bracket, it's Rs100 for the first 4km and Rs25 for each kilometer thereafter.
On Monday, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) also took a policy decision to install Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) in black-and-yellow taxis and autorickshaws to weed out illegal vehicles from roads.
Unions have welcomed these decisions.
