According to the police, the incident happened last week when the woman had flagged down the rickshaw from SV Road in Malad to go to her residence in Vasant Complex, Kandivli (W).
The accused, 30-year-old Sravan Upadhyay was allegedly known to the woman as he had dropped her several times to her place.
Mahesh Kulkarni, assistant police inspector, Charkop police said: "The incident happened at 10pm after the woman finished attending night college classes in Malad. After she got into the auto, the accused took a detour and drove her to an isolated lane."
Upadhyay then stopped the three-wheeler, and before the woman could escape, he went behind and physically misbehaved with her. He also needled her by asking why she wasn't interested in him, and said he wanted to get intimate with her. He then caught hold of her hands and began threatening her, Kulkarni informed.
Terrified, the woman pushed the accused away using her handbag and fled. She immediately approached the Charkop police, who registered a case and deployed a team to nab the accused.
The woman is employed at a private company in Parel and is pursuing part time studies, while Upadhyay is married and has two children. His wife and kids live in their native place in Uttar Pradesh.
"Upadhyay was in hiding for a few days but we managed to arrest him on Saturday," added Kulkarni. The accused was arrested under IPC Sections 365 (kidnapping), 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 506 (criminal intimidation), an is set to be produced in court on Sunday.
