Auto and taxi union representatives will be approaching transport commissioner on Tuesday asking that authorised individuals of registered unions be allowed to assist drivers with limited literacy at regional transport offices across the state.

"We want only those individuals who have work with RTO to come to our offices. If they require any assistance, our staff will guide them, but we cannot allow third party on our premises," said Prabhakar Bhalerao, RTO, West Zone (Andheri).

Mumbai autorickshaw union head Thampi Kurien said, "I, along with AL Quadros of Mumbai Taximen's Union and heads of other unions, will be meeting the transport commissioner to put forth our point of view."

The demand is to permit only those individuals who will be issued identity cards by RTOs and are part of registered and recognised unions.

"There are several drivers who find it difficult to even read a form, forget filling it. The other issue is there are some documentation works that take more than a day. The vehicle owner loses his or her income for that many days. Appointing authorised individuals will greatly help in the functioning of RTOs as well as these drivers or car owners," added Kurien.

Over a month ago, transport commissioner Mahesh Zagade's surprise visit to Andheri RTO had found an unauthorised person having documents related to the department. This resulted in action against all those individuals, mainly touts, who are liaison between RTO and car or driving licence holders.

Zagade's attempt is to make RTOs similar to passport offices, wherein only applicants are given entry, thereby curbing possibility of corruption as well as allowing only genuine applicants or individuals.
