Dressed from head to toe in a fat suit and a grey, curly-haired wig to transform into Aunty Maggy, the upcoming YouTube sensation, is actually the alter ego of comedian Rozzlin Pereira, who humbly makes people forget their everyday worries, as she takes on contemporary issues and puts a humorous twist on them.

A walk down memory lane
Pereira started posting Aunty Maggy videos on her YouTube channel, RozzCity, since the past two months, to give viewers a fresh start to the week. She says, “In a time when career stress, weight obsession, social pressures are at an all-time high, I thought that Aunty Maggy would be a breath of fresh air by doing what she does best.” Put simply, the character stands for simplistic happiness with few possessions, which shows for deep thinking on many different levels.

Aunty Maggy made her first appearance in the play He Says She Says in 2012 at Canvas Laugh Club, which was written, directed and acted by Pereira herself. She says that the overwhelming response that her character received, which was originally just a cameo, encouraged her to implement it on a broader scale. “It took me about two years to settle on the idea of taking on the character of Aunty Maggy and putting her up on the social media front for a much larger audience. It's probably one of the best decisions I've made and I've never looked back.” Pereira thanks one of her friends for the idea, though.

Variety is the spice of life
Pereira stresses on maintaining a certain level of innocence. “She is a mix of different aunties I've met, each of whom had their own quirks that defined them,” explains Pereira. Not surprisingly, the base of the character stems from her mother. “Even though my mother doesn't talk or look like Aunty Maggy, her happy-go-lucky nature and simplistic wisdom can be clearly seen in this character,” she adds. “I put a lot of effort into my attire. With the help of a designer friend, the clothing is all custom-made, which is a big part of the character. I'm thrilled that she got it right, down to Aunty Maggy's jiggly butt, which is almost as famous as her,” jokes Pereira.

With a touch of humour
Aunty Maggy tackles everyday issues such as sleeping watchmen, rise in onion prices and even porn ban. Because of this, the character has received a lot of support and appreciation. “I get messages from people in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Dubai all of whom love Aunty Maggy,” she says. With an increasing number of comedians in Mumbai, having an edge over fellow artists is important. “With varied experience in dance, music, writing and acting, I think my content will always be a mix of all these different arts,” Pereira explains. She assures variety in entertainment for the future as well.
