Auction kicks off, hundreds throng pandal for Lalbaugcha Raja's riches

Some of the gold and silver offerings that the Lalbaugcha Raja received during the 11-day Ganesh festival was auctioned on Monday. Hundreds of devotees thronged the pandal to buy the offerings.

A Prabhadevi resident, who has been coming to the auction for the last 15 years, bought a one kg silver mouse, among other things. Requesting anonymity, the devotee said, "The money received from the auction goes for charity. The items auctioned are the offerings made to Lord Ganesh. We believe that by buying these items, we will be blessed by God and will also indirectly help the needy."

Another devotee, Juhu resident Deepali Gandhi, had come to the auction along with her family. Gandhi said, "I bought a small house made of silver and gold earrings. Since these things are offered to the God, they are blessed."

Besides gold and silver, four bikes were also displayed at the auction. Parel resident Suraj Dubey (22) bought a bike for Rs64,000. Talking about the experience, he said, "I have been coming to the auction for the last four years.

Every year, we buy some gold or silver. This year, my aim was to buy the bike since it had been offered to the Raja. I did not want to lose this opportunity."

The main attraction of the auction, however, has been saved for Day III, when charanpaduka or feet made of gold, weighing 1.162kg, will be displayed. Speaking about the event, mandal secretary Sudhir Salvi said, "This year, the auction has been going on proportionately, as far as demand and supply go. The demand will increase on the last day of the auction. The auction of the charanpaduka will start from Rs35 lakh on the last day."
