Citing the example of a book on Veer Savarkar, which was reprinted recently, NCP president Sharad Pawar alleged that attempts were being made to paint Nathuram Godse as a martyr, and compare him with the likes of Bhagat Singh and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Addressing party workers during NCP’s general body meeting at Yashwantrao Chavan Centre on Wednesday, Pawar said that there was a growing feeling that by using power one can twist and tort history. He said such tendencies are on the rise and that this could derail social harmony.

Pawar said successive statements by ministers fomenting communal aspirations are nothing but an attempt to polarise the society. “I was reading a book penned by Veer Savarkar in 1904 which was reprinted recently. Savarkar has made it clear that the 1857 mutiny had nothing to do with religion. It was because all the communities had joined hands against the British.”

Getting down to specifics, the 74-year-old leader said the book, in its beginning, mentions that the book penned by Savarkar in English was translated by ‘martyr’ Nathuram Godse in 1947. “It also says that the British government had ordered imprisonment of Savarkar for 50 years. After this, Godse, who was the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, is compared with Subhash Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh.”
