An iconic structure which provides a distinct identity to the city — the Gateway of India — is under threat. The structure is already showing signs of getting affected due to atmospheric changes, besides 13 to 15 peepal tree shoots springing around it.

Aged over 90, the structure is one of the most favourite tourist places. However, the growth of peepal trees, known for their deep roots, is a matter of concern for the local fishermen, ferry operators and photographers too. "The monument is like a deity for us. We earn our livelihood because of it and we are committed to protect it in every possible way. The issue has to be dealt with urgently, before it leads to cracks in the structure, weakening it," said a photographer who frequents the site.

Fishermen and jetty operators have been keeping a close vigil at the Gateway of India. "The structure is showing signs of wither due to atmospheric changes. This is a very scary situation. The authorities should take immediate steps to control the damage in time," said a jetty operator.

While Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been taking care of all the national monuments, state department takes care of all sites in Maharashtra. Officials from the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums in Maharashtra said they have written to the ASI in Lucknow for chemical treatment. "As the problem is in its initial stages, it will be controlled in time. We are going to visit the site to prepare a detailed report for the higher authorities. However, we are not aware of peepal trees. We will inspect the site and take immediate steps to remove them," said Dr Maya Patil, deputy director of Archaeology and Museums in Maharashtra.

The structure, erected to commemorate the arrival of King George V and Queen Mary at Apollo Bunder, when they visited India in 1911, is built in Indo-Saracenic style. The design by George Wittet was sanctioned in 1914 and the construction was completed in 1924. There have been three terror attacks near the monument — two in 2003 and one in 2008.
