Mumbai witnessed the coldest day of the season on Saturday, with the temperature dipping to 13.6 degrees Celsius, about three degrees below normal. The maximum day temperature was around 28 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal.

However, it was a pleasant surprise for Mumbaikars who were seen enjoying this unexpected chill.

“It was very cold today, but quite pleasant. I had to wear two-layers of clothes but then Mumbai hardly sees winter, so it was worth it,” said Minitesh Tapre, a resident of Bandra.

Meteorological department officials attributed this drop in temperature to the prevailing western disturbance in the north and northerly cold winds blowing this side.

“These factors were responsible for the drop in temperature. Northerly winds coming to Mumbai are bringing the minimum temperature down due to the dip in temperature in the north,” said VK Rajiv, director of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai.

The temperature had first dipped to 15 degrees Celsius in mid-December and it dipped more than twice this month touching 14 degrees Celsius last week.

The minimum temperature will range between 13 and 14 degrees Celsius for another 2-3 days, till the western disturbance moves out of the city.

“After that, the temperature will rise,” said Rajiv.

Last week, northern states in India were reeling under severe cold wave conditions and dense fog, causing disturbance in air and rail transport.

The maximum temperatures have also been below normal in the past week, making days cooler than usual. Prior to that, in the beginning of January, the day temperatures had been above normal, which is around 30 degrees for this period.

Winter in Mumbai is usually not that distinct, it is characterised by cold nights and warmer days, due to its proximity to the sea.

There has been a visible drop in humidity levels, which were 67% at Santa Cruz and 40% at Colaba, which is 37% below normal. According to the IMD website, the next two days will continue to be cool.
