Looks like there’s more trouble for the MLAs who assaulted police sub inspector Sachin Suryavanshi at the Vidhan Bhavan premises on March 19. Former journalist Ketan Tirodkar has been filed a petition in the Bombay high court (HC) seeking that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe the incident as there has been no progress in the case as yet.

This is the second petition filed in connection with this case. On March 25, social activist Hemant Patil filed a public interest litigation (PIL) stating that a first information report (FIR) should be lodged against other MLAs who were involved in the attack.

On Monday, Tirodkar mentioned his petition before the division bench of justice PV Hardas and justice AR Joshi. Tirodkar argued that the crime branch, which has been conducting the probe, has not made any progress. The probe is at a standstill as the CCTV footage is unclear and the police are unable to identify other MLAs assaulting Suryavanshi.

On March 19, five MLAs — Kshitij Thakur and Pradeep Jaiswal (both Independents), Rajan Salvi (Shiv Sena), Ram Kadam (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) and Jaykumar Raval (BJP) — had allegedly assaulted assistant police inspector Sachin Suryavanshi, attached  with the Worli police station.

Suryavanshi was thrashed by the MLAs outside the visitors gallery at Vidhan Bhavan, the state’s legislature complex, as he had earlier allegedly stopped Thakur’s vehicle and fined him for speeding on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Following the incident, the five MLAs were suspended from the House till the end of the year.

Hemant Patil has sought a probe by the Director General of Police of Maharashtra or any other agency. He has also prayed that the five MLAs who had allegedly assaulted Suryavanshi be directed to pay the damages to the police officer.
