A 21-year-old aspiring fashion designer allegedly committed suicide by hanging at her residence in Malwani on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Heena Ghulam Mohammed Jilani, who was studying at a fashion designing institute in Marol.

According to the police, the J&K native was staying as a tenant alone in Malwani. Her relatives who stayed nearby had helped her find the room. Before that she had been staying in a hostel in Vakola. Her parents and brother live in Kolkata.

"Her relatives made several calls to her from Wednesday morning. When by evening there was no response, her uncle sent his son to her place at 5.15pm. However, he was unable to open the door as it was locked from inside," said an officer from Malwani police station.

He added that with help from neighbours the door was opened and Jilani was found hanging from the fan. She was immediately taken to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli (West) where she was pronounced dead.

As per the police, Jilani had been suffering from severe depression and used to take antidepressants. The reason behind taking the drastic step is being investigated. The police have also found a four-page note written in English from the spot, which matches Jilani's handwriting. In the note, she has apologised to her family for taking the step due to depression.

The landlord said they were unaware of this until a boy came to check on her. He added that this was unexpected as Jilani had shifted recently and had seemed happy. Other residents said she was well behaved and never had any issues with people staying in the locality.

A relative said, "We are in shock and unable to understand why she took this step. She never told us anything about her depression and when we spoke to her she did not sound tensed or sad. She had made a call to a friend in Kolkata and shared something with her. We want a proper police investigation to find out the real reason behind the suicide."

Senior inspector Milind Khetle said, "We are awaiting the post-mortem report. The deceased had deep ligature marks on her neck... we suspect that she was found eight-nine hours after she hung herself. We have found a note from the room and recorded statements of her mother, brother and uncle. The exact reason behind the suicide is still unknown. We have taken her cell phone and are checking her call details, we are trying to find out if she had a dispute with someone."
