The three girls from KL Ponda High School and Junior College, Sonal and Janvi Surti (not related) and Sanskriti Mayavanshi, who lost their lives in Saturday's unfortunate incident grew up in Dahanu's Ambedkar Nagar and were friends since childhood.

The entire neighbourhood mourned as corpses of the three young girls reached the locality in an ambulance on Saturday evening.

While Sonal and Janvi were classmates and studying in class XII, Sanskriti was studying in class XI. Their neighbours who gathered at their residences remembered them as ideal, hardworking students. "They were energetic and participated in all the festivities and functions of our locality. They were smart and studied diligently," said Rajiv Surti, Sonal's relative.

Sonal's inconsolable father said, "We were expecting her to score good marks in her HSC exams. We don't know why she went for that boat ride."

Janvi, the eldest daughter in her family, was ambitious and confident about scoring well in her upcoming HSC exams. "She often spoke about wanting to become a fashion designer after completing her studies. She had even pursued a crash course for the same. We supported her during her academics and wanted her to do well in life," said Prakash Surti, Janvi's uncle.

Sanskriti is remembered as energetic and friendly. Her friend Sonal Tadvi said, "We were together on the ferry boat and were clicking photographs when the boat tilted. We were holding hands until the time she slipped inside the boat's deck because of the waves."
