One of the most reputed and oldest law colleges in Asia, the Government Law College (GLC), at Churchgate, will soon undergo renovation and improve its infrastructure to accommodate more students, which came to be reduced by a recent government order. A division bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice NM Jamdar were informed on Thursday that in a meeting held on September 14, of the Governing Council, it was decided to improve the college's infrastructure, by adding more classrooms and increasing teaching staff.

The Bench also remarked that considering the rich legacy of the institution, which has produced several high court and supreme court judges, it should be preserved and maintained.

Soon, a proposal to the state government will be made for its approval of additional funds for the appointment of teachers and new classrooms, sources in the college said. Presently, there are nine permanent faculties and 27 visiting faculties for the three-year and five -year LLB courses.

GLC, established in 1855, has 17 classrooms housed in the old and annexe building. The institution has had the privilege of tutelage under eminent legal luminaries such as Dr BR Ambedkar, Lokmanya Tilak, Justice MC Chagla, Sir Motilal Setalvad, Sir Dinshaw Mulla, Justice YV Chandrachud, Nani Palkhivala and others.

Recently, the Government and University reduced seats which earlier were 240 for the three-year LLB course to 180 and for the five-year course of LLM to 120 seats.
