The Vakola police station, which was was buzzing with locals, media persons and police officers throughout the night on Saturday, had become quieter on Sunday. The police station had only a duty officer and two constables, attending to citizens. In fact, several people had come to meet senior PI Vilas Joshi without knowing that he passed away a day before.

The duty inspector said, "While some came to ask about the violence, some others had actually come to meet the senior." According to him, Joshi was a very disciplined officer and always attended to everybody's needs. "Shirke had been with us for a long time. He has temper issues but he was also a friendly officer. Joshi did not deserve to die like that," added the officer.

According to them, Shirke was supposed to be near Santa Cruz bus stop on duty but he failed to be there. His name was on the diary for not being present there between 2.30am and 6.30am (on Saturday). "Shirke's reasoning was that he had gone to get food at 2.30am and to the toilet at 6.30am," said a senior officer.

According to senior officials, in 2012 Shirke had reported sick for 70 days. "He had taken 38 days sick leave in January and February this year. Later, he remained absent from duty for six days. Joshi could have given him a leave without pay (LWP) but instead he marked them as casual leaves so that Shirke do not face any salary cut. In April, Shirke again took two days of leave for going to Tirupati temple. Therefore, it was important to get a clarification on these leaves, which is what we did. There was no lapse from our part as being alleged by the family," said the officer.
